Tribute to Al-Marhum Tan Sri Dato' Harun Mahmud Hashim

Al-Marhum Tan Sri Dato' Harun M. Hashim was born on 31st May 1929. He is a Barrister-at-Law of the Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn, London. Tan Sri Harun has had a distinguished career in government administration and the law. He began his career in government service as an Assistant District Officer in Kelantan in 1948. From 1954, he served as Magistrate, President of the Sessions Court, Deputy Public Prosecutor, Federal Counsel and State Legal Adviser. In 1967, he was appointed the first Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Agency. In 1971, he was appointed a judge of the high court and also Chairman or the Royal Commission on Remuneration and conditions of service Statutory Bodies and Local Authorities. He was appointed as a President of the Industrial Court of Malaysia in 1980. He returned to the High Court in 1985 and in 1988, was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Malaysia. Tan Sri Harun retired from the judiciary in 1994.
His other previous appointments include: Founder President of Badan Warisan Malaysia, Chairman Social Security Appellate Board, President ASEAN Law Association of Malaysia, Member Law Revision Committee, Visiting Professor of Law University of Malaya and Dean Kulliyyah of Laws International Islamic University Malaysia.
Internationally, Tan Sri Harun had been: Technical advisor to the Cambodian Development Council of the Royal Government of Cambodia; International Observer of the Parliamentary Elections of Sri Lanka; and participant in the International Roundtable Conference on the drafting of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
He was also involved in a number of bodies, some of which are: Editor-in-Chief of the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia; Editor-in-Chief of Malaysian Court Practice; Adviser Current Law Journal; Member Technical Committee of Syariah and Civil Law at JAKIM, Prime Minister's Department; Judge of Syariah Court of Appeal, Federal Territories and Pahang: Chairman Sports Advisory Panel and Member, National Sports Advisory Council, Ministry Youth and Sports; Special Panel for Senior Fellows Selection of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia; Member, Syariah Supervisory Council, Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd: and Vice-Chairman Human Rights Commission of Malaysia.
In order to honour his contributions in all corner of the society, the International Islamic University of Malaysia had decided to name the Law Centre after Al-Marhum Tan Sri Dato' Harun M. Hashim. The memorable naming ceremony was held on the 31st May 2004.
